What is Digital Nomad Visa in Spain?

  • If you are a freelancer, you must have at least one business contract from a foreign company (outside of Spain). Also, you must show that the contract includes terms and conditions between you and the company that specifies you are allowed to work remotely.

Which Requirements for Spain Digital Nomad Visa There Are?

The requirements for the Spanish visa are expected not to be mixed with the others. The requirements for this visa will be more smooth than the other options for a residence permit in Spain.

The requirements for Spain’s digital nomad visa are;

  1. Your employer or affiliated organization in business must be foreign, based outside of Spain. If you are a freelancer, you can not have income from Spanish companies more than %20 of your total income.
  2. You must submit proof that you have worked for at least three months as a freelancer or with your business connection before the Spanish digital nomad visa application.
  3. You must have a contract for at least one year with your employer or business partner.
  4. You must submit proof that you have the necessary credentials and training for business. To do this, you must have three years of work experience in the relevant sector, or you must be a graduate or postgraduate of a respected university, vocational school, or business institution.
  5. You must submit proof showing you did not have a criminal record for the last five years. You must be not blocked from entering Spain by any criminal record. The criminal record must be valid for a minimum of 90 days. It must be legalized and apostilled.
  6. You must fill out the visa application form numbered 790 038.
  7. You must pay the administrative fee for the application form.
  8. You must have private health insurance. This must be a nationwide coverage in Spain.
  9. You must prove that you have at least 26.000 € funds in your bank account. If you have dependent applicants, you will have an extra 7.000 € for each. If your funds are in a bank outside Spain, you will need a simple translation of the document.

Is There Any Minimum Income Needed for Applying for Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa?

The required minimum income is twice the official monthly minimum wage determined by the Spanish government. While still awaiting the official regulations, there are some announcements made by the Spanish governmental institutions.

Currently, the minimum monthly wage is 1.000 €. In 2023, it is expected to raise the maximumly to 1.100€. So, you will need a minimum of 2.000 € income monthly to be eligible for this visa.

The second applicant, which is dependent on you, must have 75% of the monthly minimum wage. It will be applied as 25% for the other applicants.

What Are the Tax Benefits of Living in Spain with Digital Nomad Visa?

The tax advantage of the Spanish digital nomad visa is being eligible for the improved Non-Resident Income Tax Regime. This will allow digital nomads to benefit from a flat tax rate of 24%, for income up to 600.000 €. Normally, this tax rate is progressive and can reach up to %47.

To benefit from this, applicants must also start another process with the Tax Agency of Spain. The process must be started within six months starting from obtaining the visa. The process of this regime is called the “Beckham Law” (Ley Beckham in Spanish).

How to Apply for Digital Nomad Visa in Spain, Including Validity and Renewal Durations

The validity durations will be 1 or 3 years based on your application location choice. Residence permit applications in Spain and outside may differ. For both validity and renewal, you will have two options;

If you are applying for this visa in Spain;

  • Let’s take an example that you have a tourist visa and if you are in a residency in Spain currently. You may directly apply for the digital nomad visa during the first 90 days of your current visa. It will be given for 3 years (You may request a shorter period) and can be renewed every 2 years.

If you are applying outside Spain;

  • You may apply at the Spanish consulate in your origin country. You will be given a 1-year digital nomad visa. Later, you may turn it into a 3-year visa.

You may apply for a Spanish digital nomad visa in or outside Spain. For outside, you may apply at the Spanish consulate in your home country. In Spain, you must apply at the immigration office, UGE (Unidad de Grandes Empresas y Colectivos Estratégicos).

Will the Duration of the Spanish Digital Nomad Visa be Counted as Residency Duration for Spanish Citizenship?

Yes, it will. Just like any other Spain residence permit card, duration is counted as Spanish citizenship duration. As there are various residence permit projects, such as the Spanish Golden Visa, this visa’s duration will be counted as residency duration.

Which Dependents are Eligible for Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa?

The dependents eligible for the Spanish digital nomad visa include the applicant’s partner, spouse, and children. If your children are above the age of 18, they must not have a separate family. Also, they must be financially reliant on you.
